Warning to Britain and EU: Beware of the Russian Bear!
When any spy dies that’s just part of the game. When a double agent dies then he/she double-crossed two clients at the same time. Under no condition does a country in which the spy dies, retaliate against the spy’s homeland.
The present situ in Britain where a Russian double-agent was poisoned along with his daughter does not call for the massive over-reaction that has occurred. There is no reason for Prime Minister Teresa May to throw out official Russian representatives in retaliation for some corrupt individual’s death.
The key word is retaliation…..against whom and what? If a corrupt Moscow businessman seeks asylum in London suburbs for his ill-gotten gains then who’s business is it? Does England’s equivalent of the dysfunctional FBI, the National Crime Agency, want to arrest these Russian miscreants ? If so, then why does England have to push for a boycott of the World Cup? [FP, Mark Galeotti, 3/27/18].
I have this uncomfortable feeling that Ms. May has no idea about what she is doing. Over the past two years, I have stated my concerns about her inability to negotiate effectively with the EU on a reasonable Brexit strategy. Similarly, she seems completely befuddled over the idea that throwing out Russian diplomats or boycotting a worldwide event may actually affect President Vladimir Putin.
I can assure Ms. May that she is doing the dirty work for Putin. Yes, Putin has warned all the corrupt former KGB operatives [they were all KGB before the FSB] if they do not return the money that was allocated to them during the decrepit Yeltsin/Gorbachev years, they would die… or worse.
Russia is not a country with which one should toy. She is like her people: fun-loving, hard-drinking, and very serious about her national interests. Ask the Nazis about Stalingrad and how they lost the war back in 1941?
Putin is aping some of the more harsh attributes of his ruthless predecessor, Stalin. Those of us who worked in both the Soviet Union as well as Russia, know that Russians never forget an insult or an injustice committed against them. The death of a Russian double-agent is not the concern of anyone except perhaps MI-6, Mossad, or the CIA. It is not the bailiwick of the Prime Minister’s office. More importantly, May’s over-reaction to such a minor incident will prove to become counter-productive, if not self-destructive. Everyone knows that London is replete with the Russian kleptocrats who stole billions of dollars from the Kremlin, just like Putin had done before them.
There were some corrupt Russians who lived next to me in South Beach, Miami and one day they just disappeared. I never asked why or where they had gone. I presumed that Putin’s outreach had been so highly developed that many of these Russian miscreants died mysteriously while swimming in the shallow end of a pool.
See is David Cronenberg’s brilliant movie, “Eastern Promises” to understand the depth and breadth of Russian corruption transported to London. In the words of the lead actor Viggo Mortensen who studied the tattoos on the Russian gangster’s bodies, he said the following:
“Basically the history of a dead man/spy is written on their bodies, their tattoos. It’s their calling card.”
Ms. May should look at the dead body of the double agent before entering into the den of the bear. I can assure you that this animal will tear you and your country apart without any effort, or concern. You have more important things to do … like Brexit!
